The Metropolitan Police Department of the District of Columbia has a unique role in that it serves as a local police department, with county, state, and federal responsibilities. It is under a municipal government but operates under federal authority.
The mission of the Special Operations Division is to support patrol operations by developing special tactics and deploying specially trained personnel in unusual law enforcement situations and events; assisting the District Commanders with selective traffic enforcement, traffic control, accident investigation and public vehicle regulation enforcement; and coordinating with other agencies and organizational elements concerning special events and potential catastrophic situations.
VA-Spaces was given the opportunity to renovate and expand within the existing property and relocate several departments into an adjacent connected space. The department’s requested collaboration spaces open office areas along the window lines to promote wellness, daylight, and exterior views within the space. Dedicated meeting rooms and specialty areas, such as bike storage rooms as well as a roll call room, were strategically planned within the floor plan for all departments to use. Branding was a key element, and bright surfaces were considered for the selection of finishes and furniture.
